  • Choose a dog that fits your lifestyle.

After centuries of breeding, the modern dog is one of the most diverse animal species in the world. While it’s a dog for every lifestyle, not all dogs will meet their specific needs. For example; If you want to relax, you shouldn’t buy a Jack Russell Terrier that barks constantly and is known for its high energy. Instead, you might want a bulldog who prefers to cuddle on the couch all day. Investigate the personalities and care needs of the various breeds. Ask dog owners about their breed’s personality.

Mixed breeds are great options as they can have traits of a variety of breeds that might interest you. Owning a dog is a long-term responsibility as most dogs live 10-15 years. Make sure your breed’s temperament matches your lifestyle. If you haven’t started a family yet, also consider whether you are considering having children in the next 10 years. Some breeds are not recommended for families with children.

  • Don’t get an energetic dog

Be honest with yourself about the compatibility of the dog you want to get with your lifestyle. Just don’t buy a dog that needs a lot more action to start a healthier lifestyle. If you can’t keep up with the high-energy dog’s exercise, you and the dog will be disappointed too. Aside from the breed’s needs and temperament, write down how you would meet those needs. If it will take a lot of effort to change your lifestyle, you should choose a different dog.

  •  Give your dog a practical name.

The dog needs to be able to learn his own name easily so that you can get his attention during training. The name should have clear, harsh sounds that the dog can recognize. Names like “Badi”, “Pasha” or “Bibi” sound different from the regular flow of human speech your dog hears. Use your name often when you play with your dog, love him, train, or just need to get your attention. If your dog looks at you when you say his name, it means he has learned his name. Establish a positive relationship with her name so she’ll stay focused when you say her name. When you respond to his name, praise him and reward him.

  • Set enough time for training

Initially, the training should begin with 5-minute sessions spread over the day and should not last more than 20 minutes. This is especially important in puppies because, like little children, they have short attention spans and they are easily bored. You are not just going to train your dog in these sessions. Training basically takes place every time you interact with your pet during the day. It learns something from you with every interaction.

Bad dog habits develop when dogs are allowed to misbehave outside of special training sessions. So always keep an eye on your dog, except during training sessions. If he knows this during training sessions, make sure you remember it outside of the training.

  • Reward instantly

Dogs do not understand long-term causes and consequences. They learn fast. To support a behavior, you must praise or reward your dog within 2 seconds of that behavior. If you wait too long, the reward will not be able to relate to the action you want it to take. Also, you have to make sure your reward is done quickly to get the right result.

Otherwise, you can reward behaviors you don’t want. For example; Imagine you’re teaching your dog the “sit down” command. He sits down for a moment and when you praise and reward him he gets up. In this case, you are rewarding standing behavior, not sitting behavior.

  • Always reward success and good behavior with praise and sometimes with a small treat.

Small rewards help your dog stay motivated to train. The prize should be small, tasty and easy to chew. You don’t want to interrupt the training session or feed the dog right away. Consider how long it takes him to chew hard treats and semi-moist treats. A food the size of a pencil eraser is enough to convey the message. So you don’t have to wait for the dog to eat it long.

  • Avoid barking

If your dog barks at you unwillingly, ignore him until it stops and then reward him by praising him. Sometimes they bark to get attention, sometimes they bark out of frustration. Throwing a ball or toy. If you do that, he learns that when you bark, he will do something he wants. Don’t yell at the dog for quiet, as this will reward him with attention.

  • Support the training throughout your dog’s life

Since this behavior is so important, it must be supported throughout his life. When taking leash-free walks with your dog, have a treat in your pocket to reinforce the order. You should also teach a command that lets the dog know that it doesn’t always have to be with you. You can express this as “free”, but the idea is that the dog can do whatever he wants and not be under your command until you give him orders.

  • Get the dog used to the leash

This does not need to be paired with any spoken command. Grab the leash when your dog comes to you, so he gets used to touching him and doesn’t get scared. When you bend down to reward him for the command to “come”, hold him by the leash while you give him the treat and love around his neck. Occasionally, but not always, the leash should be put on the leash when it grabs the leash. Also, you can always put a short leash on and “free” it again. Leashes should mean fun things are going to happen and you’re going places. There is no room for harsh discipline.
